Shrek 2 Drinking Game: An Epic Drinking Adventure

If you’re planning to host a house party or have friends over, why not try something new that’ll really get the party going? And no, we don’t mean the age old party games like Spin the Bottle which not even 13 year olds play these days.

If you are old enough to drink now, you would also have grown up with the iconic Shrek movies. In this article, we teach you how to play a super fun Shrek drinking game (yes, you read that right). Read on to find out more.

Shrek– What’s That?

If you had grown up during the 00s, you would know the cultural impact of the Shrek film franchise. From the epic soundtrack to hilarious jokes, Shrek is truly a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience. You might think we were joking with the “cultural impact”, but did you know in 2020, the film was added to the National Film Registry for preservation?

For those unfamiliar with Shrek, here’s an important history lesson for you. Shrek is an American computer-animated fantasy comedy film which revolves around an ogre, the film series’ titular main character, Shrek. In a day when animated films were all about conventionally beautiful human characters, Shrek went ahead with an highly relatable anti-social and highly territorial ogre as its main character.

The thing about Shrek is, it’s for everybody. The dialoge and screenplay are so cleverly executed that somehow, people of all age groups are fans of it. Steven Rosen of The Denver Post rightly said “DreamWorks Pictures again proves a name to trust for imaginative, funny animated movies that delight kids and adults equally.”

Shrek 2 Drinking Game– How Does It Work?

Now that we’re done fangirling (no promises, though) about the marvel that is Shrek, how is all this linked to a party drinking game? As mentioned earlier, Shrek and its sequels became insanely popular over the years and their popularity spilled over into numerous cross-references in popular culture.

From memes to online games, from fanfiction to merchandise, Shrek has a loyal internet fandom. Within these online social networks was created a game which spread like wildfire among millennials who grew up with Shrek.

To play the Shrek drinking game, the players or participants take a shot or a sip of an alcoholic beverage every time a specific character does or says something. If a player passes or fails to take a shot, they lose a point. For every shot they take, they gain a point.

At the end of the movie, the points are totalled and tallied, and the player with the highest score wins the game. This game is a total game-changer as you would be doing three things at once: getting sloshed, watching a kickass movie, and having fun with your mates.

The rules of the game and the things you will need to play it will be discussed in the next section. Let’s get the party started.

Shrek 2 Drinking Game– Rules and Gameplay

There isn’t just one way in which you can play this game; you can customize it according to your preferences. For example, if you don’t drink alcohol, you can substitute it for something else. And you can choose which scenes to drink at. The game is all about having a good time, so don’t worry too much about the rules.

With that being said, the aim of the game is to have a winner at the end of the movie. The winner is the player with the highest score. You can also choose to forgo the point system and have a less competitive, chill game. In this case, the aim of the game is to make it to the end of the film.

Both versions of the game are extremely fun, and it totally depends on the vibe of the party to choose which one you will be playing; if you are competitive and your friends are too, play with the point system and the aim is to win. If you want a more relaxed atmosphere, play without points so that the aim is to see who gets drunk the fastest.

Setting Up

Unlike other complicated games, you only need two things for the Shek 2 drinking game: the Shrek 2 movie and alcohol. To set up the game, get the movie on TV and have enough beer (or beverage of choice)  within reach of all the players. Once everyone is seated and ready to play, start the movie and it’s game time!

Gameplay

The game is very easy, which makes it all the more better to follow even when you’re tipsy. The game is simple: start the movie and each time a character says or does something that’s pre-decided, the players need to take a shot or sip of their drink.

There is no universal ruleset for this game, so feel free to add or subtract according to your preferences. Although, if you are following a specific set of rules, make sure to discuss them with the rest of the group before starting the game to avoid confusion.

We have some pre-established rules to start you off, which you can find below.

Take a shot when:

  • Anyone says “Ogre”
  • Anyone says “Charming”
  • There’s a major movie reference
  • There’s a bodily function joke (farts, burps, or belches)
  • Donkey sings
  • A pop song begins

Take two shots when:

  • Every time you laugh for longer than 5 seconds.
  • Every time a character sings.
  • Someone says, “Lord Farquad.”

Points Game

The same game could be played with points to decide an overall winner. Every time a player takes a shot, they get a point. If they take two shots, they receive two. However, if someone passes or doesn’t take a shot, they lose a point.

At the end of the movie, calculate each player’s final score and compare it with others to determine the winner. The player with the highest score wins the game. The point system adds a fun, competitive edge to the game. However, if you also want to watch the movie properly, we suggest playing without points as you will only be looking at your friends to see if they’ve missed taking a drink.

Test of Endurance

You can even turn the game around and make it about testing who among your friends has the highest capacity for alcohol. As the film progresses, your friends will start to get drunker. The last person to get drunk is the winner of the game.

Final Thoughts

The Shrek 2 drinking game is an amazing inclusion to game nights and house parties. It requires very little and is great when played with a group of more than 6 people. However, it is very easy to get carried away in all the fun and lose track of your alcohol consumption. Remember that it’s just a game and drink only what you can handle to have the most fun. Cheers and bottoms up!
