Online Dating: Is It All It’s Cracked Up To Be?
|It’s fair to say that the days of seeing the love of your life across a crowded room are over. For the most part we spend our time out in public glued to our mobile phones. So it perhaps makes sense that dating is well and truly mobile.
But is it effective?
Most of what we do these days have some form of digital input, whether it be dating, playing console games, shopping, or let’s face it, getting our kicks on MrPornGeek too. It’s perhaps one of the reasons why choosing a partner online is such a viable option.
More of us are dating online with research suggesting that by 2031 over 50% of Brits will meet their partner via a website or app.
That figure increases to 70% by 2040, with many trying to predict exactly how the dating landscape will be at that point.
We’ve seen technology enhance industries hugely in recent years and that’s only going to seep into dating too. The likes of VR and AR in adult entertainment would be a perfect fit in dating apps, with VR dates likely to be viable before even meeting face to face.
That will increase accessibility and, ultimately, convenience in a world where we’re busier than ever before.
How effective it is is of course down to your own expectations. It’s now thought around 17% of marriages come through online dating, with 20% of all relationships.
What’s more, while you may think the likes of Tinder is purely for hookups, around 80% of users are actually looking for long-term relationships.
Further studies by the University of Vienna have also found that marriages that begin online are also less likely to end within the first year.
So it is a form of dating that is continuing to prove more effective.
Which makes complete sense. They say you shouldn’t judge a book by the front cover, but that’s exactly what we are doing when out and about in bars, restaurants, even on the street.
Online dating allows a first impression to be followed by reading more about a person, including likes and dislikes, hobbies and what sort of relationship they are looking for. That gives you a much better idea of whether you’re a good match.
As technology evolves online dating is only going to make its services even more streamlined. That means a more effective service and one that really does make it all it’s cracked up to be.
